Re-entry Rocks / Mural
2022 / Dumbo, New York
with Ilsy Jeon
Thank you so much to Sharon Richardson, the founder of Re-entry Rocks for asking me to paint and design this wonderful mural for their new and exciting office space in Dumbo, New York. It was such an honor to do my first solo mural for such an incredible, thoughtful, powerful team who are empowering, transforming, and rebuilding lives of so many formerly incarcerated women and nonbinary persons.
Thank you to Sharon for sharing her story with me and deciding on these design elements - from the shattered mirrors and broken handcuffs to the iconic portraits of these 28 wonderful women.
Thank you so much to Ilsy Jeon for being the most caring assistant and working so hard to make everything come alive (especially the baby butterflies) and for helping me to finish this mural in less than 10 days time.
Thank you so much to Katie Yamasaki who helped with everything on this mural from lending the art supplies and mural paint to extending her valuable wisdom and support my way. It was such a wonderful experience and I’m so grateful to have been brought on this unforgettable journey.
“Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I’ll rise.”
